Issues

The issues facing the LGBTQIA+ community are vast and complex. This page will give you an introduction to some of the more prominent ones. It is by no means exhaustive or complete, but is instead intended to give you a solid ground from which to begin your research and advocacy.

Discrimination

LGBTQIA+ people experience many forms of discrimination. They can be denied housing, jobs, education, public services, and more. Though there are some protections under the law, not all LGBTQIA+ people are protected equally. And even when discrimination is illegal, it still happens at disproportionate rates. The articles below will give you a better picture of some of the discrimination LGBTQIA+ people face.

Violence

LGBTQIA+ people are victims of violence at much higher rates than the rest of the population. Though hate crime laws have attempted to curb such violence, LGBTQIA+ people still often fear for their safety. The articles below detail the current situation in regards to anti-LGBTQIA+ violence.

Poverty

LGBTQIA+ people, especially LGBTQIA+ youth, are especially vunerable to poverty and homelessness. Discrimination, mental health issues, and a lack of support networks all contribute to this risk. The articles below explore the impact of poverty and the experiences of homelessness LGBTQIA+ people.

Health

LGBTIQA+ people often have difficult getting proper medical care, due to discrimination, ignorance, or lack of access. They also experience higher rates of mental health and substance abuse issues. The articles below will discuss some the issues relevant to this topic.
